Building environmental stewardship to protect East Kolkata Wetlands

Nestled on the eastern fringes of Kolkata is a hidden gem that is often overlooked—the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW). Every single day, this expanse treats over 900 million litres of sewage generated by the city of Kolkata, home to a population of 15 million.

Recognized as a Ramsar site under the International Convention on Wetlands, the EKW spans over 12,500 hectares. It boasts of rich biological diversity, crucial for countless species of animals and plants to survive. This unique ecosystem stands as a testament to the enduring resilience of nature, sustaining life amidst the burgeoning urban sprawl.

In a passionate pursuit of environmental advocacy, the Disappearing Dialogues Collective (dD) has cultivated a profound connection with the EKW community. dD strives to amplify local voices, archive ecological assets, build ambassadors for change, and empower communities.

To commemorate World Wetlands Day on the 2nd of February, for the past eight years, dD has been celebrating ‘Jolabhumi Utsav.’ In Bengali, ‘jolabhumi’ means wetlands, and ‘utsav’ means festival. This celebration seamlessly blends art, culture and environmental awareness. It serves as a rallying point for wetland communities, schools, organizations, authorities, and the public. Jolabhumi Utsav is also a call to action. It invites individuals to engage with the East Kolkata Wetlands and become catalysts for positive ecological change.

In 2024, the Utsav takes an exciting turn with ‘Walk for the Wetlands.’ It is an event designed to unite schools, young enthusiasts, the general public, environmental advocates, diverse organizations, and stakeholders from various fields. Led by the youth, the walk aims to be a collective movement showcasing a combined strength in the wetland conservation mission.

Partnering with Wipro earthian, dD has expanded its network, connecting with diverse schools, fostering a sense of shared responsibility toward environmental stewardship that extends beyond classroom walls.
