Employee Engagement

History of Wipro Cares

Wipro Cares was conceived as an initiative to encourage employee citizenship and responsibility. Although Wipro Cares was formally established as a Trust in 2002, the idea to form Wipro Cares took shape as a group of employees coordinated and responded to the Odisha cyclone, and Gujarat earthquake in 2001-02, where many people had lost their lives. As an employee-led initiative, Wipro Cares provides a unique opportunity for Wipro employees to respond to community needs and contribute to social causes.

Wipro Cares is an employee-led community initiative arm of the Wipro Foundation and engages in Education, Primary Healthcare, Community Ecology, and Disaster Response in proximate communities.

Our Operating and Governing Principles

Through Wipro Cares, employees engage meaningfully with disadvantaged communities who are proximate to Wipro locations. Employees can choose to volunteer with our partners and/or contribute monetarily. All contributions made by Wipro employees are matched 1:1 by Wipro.

Employees are an integral part of our social programs. They play a key role in contributing to disadvantaged communities. More than 45,000 Wipro employees are currently engaged with Wipro Cares either through volunteering or by way of monetary contributions or both. The Wipro Cares governance framework is a great example of employees playing a key role in volunteering and contribution.

  • All our programs are executed through a carefully selected network of partners. We are not a field organization and don’t implement programs directly
  • We select our partners based on alignment with our values and beliefs. We look out for committed people who combine domain knowledge and competence with integrity, transparency, and commitment to constitutional values
  • We emphasize that social initiatives should not be an act of patronage and obligation. Our relationship with partners is that of being co-travellers and collaborators, rather than ‘giver-beneficiary’. At the same time, we ensure our relationships are based on the highest professional standards that are rigorous, goal and outcome-oriented, and subject to regular review and feedback mechanisms.

Employee Volunteering

Wipro encourages employees to volunteer and act as catalysts in bringing about positive change in society and also learn in the process.

Wipro Cares has established Location Chapters across Wipro locations around the globe. The Location Chapters are championed by a senior management person who guides and directs the core volunteering teams. The Location Chapter teams organize short term and long term volunteering activities to enable employees to engage with local communities in meaningful ways. Some of Wipro Cares’ flagship programs include blood donation camps, disaster response drives, tree plantation initiatives, developing soft skills of students from disadvantaged communities, and learning and mentorship opportunities for students from vulnerable backgrounds pursuing science, computer, etc.

Our Location Chapters also celebrate special events and festive days with the disadvantaged. Every year, we organize volunteering activities with proximate disadvantaged community members during the Spirit of Wipro Run to build up our collective desire to excel and to not give up easily, to act with sensitivity, and have unyielding integrity at all times. Since April 2020, many Location Chapters have been actively involved in our integrated response to COVID-19 pandemic.
