About Sahasra Deepika Institute

Sahasra Deepika Institute provides a stable, caring environment and well-rounded education for 80 girls from kindergarten to 10th standard. The majority of girls in our care come from single-parent households; most of their mothers work as house cleaners, laborers or in the garment industry. Our four-acre campus includes a residential facility, library, organic garden, and playground.

Our Mission

Sahasra Deepika, which means a thousand lights, is a non-profit foundation that houses and educates underprivileged children in Bangalore, India. Our students are encouraged to develop their intellectual, social, and academic potential so that they can feel self-empowered and contribute to the community at large.

Our Vision

We aspire to give our students a well-rounded education and stable upbringing while instilling the importance of integrity and service, empowering them to productively participate in their communities and shape the future of our world.

The Approach

We counsel the mothers twice a year about safety, health, and welfare while they are with them. Through our outreach program, we reach out to 50 government schools to spread awareness. They can reach out to us when a scholarly child cannot afford college. We also conduct teachers’ empowerment program once a year. In a critical time like this, we try to help as we can and motivate others to help the needy.

Locations

Sahasra Deepika International for Education is in the outskirts of Bangalore located at Vishwamanava Kshetra, Huluksavanahalli, Sakalavara Post, Anekal Taluk, Bangalore 560083.

Plan for next 1-3 years

Dr. T.V. Ramakrishna and Mrs. Vijaya Ramakrishna (Founders) aim to give excellent education to girl children and make them independent. They ensure that their academic ambitions are fulfilled. Currently, Sahasra Deepika houses 80 girls in campus and 20 girls in colleges. Our dream is to raise our admissions every year with the generous support from Wipro. Next year, we plan to increase educated staffs to give nurturing support to children in their studies as well as in upbringing.

Response to COVID

Sahasra Deepika International for Education greatly thank Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives for funding us towards COVID-19 relief. Sahasra Deepika has been involved in procurement and distribution of the rations to migrant laborers in the surrounding villages of Jigani and Kallubalu as they do not have access to food. Volunteers who have been involved in distributing ration kits helped with the packing of rations.

SDIE is involved in procurement and packing of the rations with help from staff and local volunteers who have been involved in distributing cooked food and have permits from the local authorities to do so now.

SDIE has a significant local profile. Teachers from the Vivekananda Kendra School approached them for aid, as they were approached by residents from the neighborhood and maintain lists (lists were drawn up by the Vivekananda School Teachers for people who have been given dry rations on a weekly rotational short-term basis by SDIE and the Vivekananda School teachers through internal resources) and follow-up (they keep tabs on the families who have been given ration kits).

350 families to be given weekly dry rations at INR 724 per kit with rice, flour, oil, salt, masala. SIDE staff is involved in procurement and packing along with local volunteers; distribution is done by volunteers and teachers of the Vivekananda Kendra School. 1500 families were benefited in the following villages in and around Jigani area, Bangalore including Kallu Balu Village, Waddara Palya, Koppa Gate, Jigani.
